New Mexico Sport Aviation

Based at the Santa Fe Municipal Airport, we offer sport, recreational, and private pilot training along with rental of our airplanes.

The sport pilot certificate has opened a new chapter for aviation - no medical exam is required and we can offer training in new airplanes at a lower cost. Additionally, licensed pilots who let their medical certificates lapse can get back in the air exercising sport pilot privileges in our airplanes.

All of our airplanes rent for $104 per hour. Airplane rental rates include fuel and are billed only for the time the engine runs. We never impose a "fuel surcharge."

A waiver of the $2500 insurance deductible is $5 per hour. Please ask about how our insurance covers you, we carry premium coverage and costly "renters insurance" is often not necessary when flying our airplanes.

Instruction with Michael is $70 per hour.

We service portable oxygen cylinders, a fill up is only $20.

Albuquerque and Denver sectional charts (by DuraCharts) are available for $7.50.

Below are some estimates of what it may cost to earn your pilot certificate. Your final cost may be higher or lower. The FAA requires less experience than I’ve indicated here, but everyone learns at their own pace and the times presented are a realistic average. It is a rare person who is ready to take the flight test with only the FAA’s minimum required flight time, after giving 4000 hours of instruction I've only seen it five times. We do regularly complete the instrument rating at the FAA minimum 40 hours.

There are ways to keep costs down- the more frequently you fly the less your total cost will be. Studying at home will also reduce the amount of instruction needed. Read all you can and take every online class there is, you'll pick up many small details we can't cover together.

All flight training is billed hourly. Taxes and airport fees are extra, a cash discount is available. Cash, checks, and most credit cards are accepted.
