New Mexico Sport Aviation

Based at the Santa Fe Municipal Airport, we offer sport, recreational, and private pilot training along with rental of our airplanes.

The sport pilot certificate has opened a new chapter for aviation - no medical exam is required and we can offer training in new airplanes at a lower cost. Additionally, licensed pilots who let their medical certificates lapse can get back in the air exercising sport pilot privileges in our airplanes.

We offer a modern approach to flight training, personalized to your aviation goals

New Mexico Sport Aviation was founded in 2010 to bring a new approach to flight instruction for New Mexico. Many people have been surprised to find that flight training is is often given by inexperienced pilots in worn-out airplanes. It doesn’t need to be that way, with a commitment to using seasoned instructors and state-of-the-art aircraft NMSA is leading the change. Our airplanes are all hangared so they can be ready to fly 365 days a year.

Modern flight training goes beyond choosing the right airplanes: instructors themselves must have ongoing training in new technologies, instructional approaches must reviewed for effectiveness, and we must accept that there is no one-size-fits-all approach for learning to fly. We're proud to use in-cockpit video and flight track recording so your learning can continue at home.

Whether you train with Michael or one of our partner instructors you can be confident that your flight instructor has many thousands of flight hours and many years experience teaching people how to fly.

Michael Szczepanski

With over 10,000 hours of flying experience, including over 5000 hours giving flight instruction, Michael is the ideal choice to teach you to fly. With a patient and calm approach you’ll be able to enjoy every challenge of the learning process.

Since learning to fly in 1994 with the Brown University Flying Club Michael’s passion for aviation has had an overwhelming influence on his life. Beyond flight instruction he has flown skydivers, air ambulance, a private jet, for an airline, and overnight freight.

Utilizing a combination of skills-building and real world scenario-based training, Michael will help you develop the skills to be a proficient and safe pilot while keeping in mind that learning to fly should be fun! When not instructing Michael flies a King Air B200 for work and a Cessna 182 for fun.

New Mexico Sport Aviation is pleased to offer instruction by Jean-Luc Pous, an aviator whose experience not only spans the globe, but covers many types of flying. With over 7,000 hours of flying experience, 3,000 of which have been in flight instruction, Jean-Luc holds licenses as a private pilot, commercial pilot,  airline transport pilot, in warbirds, and as a flight instructor.

Passionate about flying since he was a small child, Jean-Luc, who was born in a French colony but is now a very happy U.S. citizen, has flown throughout Europe and the USA, in Egypt, Malaysia even regularly from the Congo to France in a Cessna. Although he has been a technical director for an international corporation, responsible for processes heavily used in aviation, he is today exclusively an airline transport pilot and an instructor.

Teaching is one of Jean-Luc’s greatest joys, and he is committed to sharing the practical experience of his life in flying in a thorough and steady manner.  He hold three instructor certificates, 2 above the sea and one under:  Of course in Aviation as mentioned above, plus national skydiving instructor in Europe, plus technical and deep diving (TriMix) instructor with diving award.
